World Cup 2022 Team Guides, Group D: France, Australia, Denmark, Tunisia

0

You might have to go back to 1962 to find the last time a team won the world title, but still – don’t expect the rest of Group D to underestimate France.

Whether Didier Deschamps’ team can repeat the exploits of Brazil 50 years ago remains to be seen, but any team featuring Kylian Mbappe and Real Madrid’s Karim Benzema must be taken very seriously.

Denmark will provide a tough test, especially after impressing with a run to the last four at the last European Championships and were expected to qualify with the French, although in such a tough group nothing to be expected from Tunisia or Australia could be a few The path has twists and turns.

FRANCE

Coaches: Didier Deschamps

Highest degree: Winner (1998, 2018)

End of 2018: winner

FOX betting odds: +550

Key Characters: Kylian Mbappe, Karim Benzema

What we look forward to: Mbappe lit up the World Cup four years ago and his partnership with Benzema was set to be one of the deadliest of the tournament. If Mbappe fires from all guns, France will go far.

Success looks like this: winner

Achilles heel: French teams have had problems with team harmony and attitude in the past, most notably in South Africa 2010. When things start badly, coach Deschamps has to work hard to keep everyone on the side. He will also hope that the injuries that disrupted the build-up don’t worsen.

X factor: It has to be Mbappe’s blistering pace that can help convert defense into attack in the blink of an eye. The Paris St Germain star is deadly in front of goal but it’s his speed – and ability to tear defenses apart – that will be key to France’s hopes of a third world title.

DENMARK

Coaches: Kasper Hjulmand

Highest degree: Quarterfinals (1998)

End of 2018: round of 16

FOX betting odds: +2800

Key Characters: Mikkel Damsgaard, Christian Eriksen, and Simon Kjaer

What we look forward to: It will be great to see Christian Eriksen back in international football after his shocking collapse at the European Championships. The footballing world was stunned when the Manchester United midfielder suffered cardiac arrest but he has made a full recovery and remains a key man for Denmark.

Success looks like this: quarter finals

Achilles heel: Surprisingly, it could be goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel, long one of the most important members of the squad. Schmeichel has been in mixed form since leaving Leicester City for French club Nice. He is in danger of losing his first team spot at club level.

X factor: Eintracht Frankfurt star Jesper Lindstrom is one of the Bundesliga’s rising stars and will provide Denmark in Qatar. Lindstrom is a great dribbler and a bag of tricks. He adds a real cutting edge to attack and can play both down the wing and central when needed.

AUSTRALIA

Coaches: Graham Arnold

Highest degree: Last 16 (2006)

End of 2018: N / A

FOX betting odds: +50000

Key Characters: Aaron Mooy, Tom Rogic

What we look forward to: Attacking midfielder Ajdin Hrustic was a Europa League winner with Eintracht Frankfurt and showed his talent for the big event when he scored a penalty in the shootout against Rangers in the final. Now plays for Hellas Verona in Italy.

Success looks like this: last 16

Achilles heel: This is an Aussie side who lack experience at the highest level and that could cost them dearly. They have to play without fear if they want to get out of the group, but even that probably won’t be enough.

X factor: Much is expected of 18-year-old sensation Garang Kuol, who has just joined the Premier League for Newcastle United. He recently became the youngest Socceroo since Harry Kewell in 1996. The attacker has an eye for goal and will be an unknown to many.

TUNISIA

Coaches: Jalel Kadri

Highest degree: Group stage (1978, 2002, 2018)

End of 2018: group stage

FOX betting odds: +50000

Key Characters: Youssef Msakni and Hannibal Mejbri

What we look forward to: The Carthage Eagles have never made it past the group stage but it should be fun to watch as their progress to the last eight of the Africa Cup of Nations makes a difference. Beating Nigeria in the round of 16 was a highlight, only to be shocked by Burkina Faso in the quarters.

Success looks like this: last 16

Achilles heel: Mondher Kebaier lost his job after failing to find success at the Africa Cup of Nations earlier this year, while new coach Jalel Kabaier was criticized for his defensive approach. Recent defeats to Mali and Gambia have not given Morocco’s fervent fanbase too much hope.

X factor:Captain Wahbi Khazri has played over 70 games and scored 24 goals since 2013. He has represented Tunisia in five African Nations tournaments, as well as at the last World Cup in Russia.
