What we learned from our visit to the set

The Suicide Squad is led by James Gunn and follows Task Force X, a team of villains on a search and extermination mission. The team’s commander is Amanda Waller, who will not hesitate to remotely eliminate members with explosives if they disobey orders. Nerd Reactor was invited to the Atlanta, Georgia movie set, and we’re here to share our experiences and interviews with the cast and crew including Gunn, Margot Robbie, John Cena, and more.

Together with selected media representatives, I was able to visit the sets of the jungle and Jotunheim, a facility that hides dark secrets from the past. These locations will have lots of enemies for The Suicide Squad to fight, and the huge set really captures the different environments.

The trailer shows Jotunheim, a prison and a laboratory in Corto Maltese. It is inhabited by the current dictator Silvio Luna, the antagonist of the film, and during our visit to the set the film crew already had fun blowing the place to pieces. We saw rubble everywhere and looking at the movie monitor there was an intense moment between the two characters from the team.

The Suicide Squad is inspired by classic westerns and war films, but it will have this DC and supervillain spectacle. Director James Gunn brings these genres together and mixes them with the super villain team.

“Much of the film is in the war caper genre, which hasn’t really been around for a long time,” said the director. “But in the sixties, late sixties with movies like Dirty Dozen and Kelly’s Heroes and Where Eagles Dare, that was a really vibrant genre and one of the great genres in the world, and you take that engine and then you add the fun of Suicide Squad to it. “

With Guardians of the Galaxy and The Suicide Squad, Gunn was able to tell these stories differently.

“When I came to Guardians, I was able to do a space opera in a very different way in so many ways,” said Gunn. “It’s my way of doing a war film very differently. And I thought it was something I could do. And it surprised people both by giving them something completely different from what they expected, like we did at Guardians. People first saw this trailer with these strange characters in prison and what was wrong with them. To be able to do something again where people might expect it to be like guards, they might expect it to be like the first suicide squad, they might expect it to be, whatever, but it’s not like any other of these things. “

Gunn has assured us that The Suicide Squad will be different from Guardians of the Galaxy, especially with its R rating.

“I mean, it’s a much, much, much rougher movie than Guardians of the Galaxy,” he said. “Everything is almost entirely practical. The biggest sets I’ve shot in almost all of the films are getting more and more visual. I could take all of the department heads I’ve used on other films and just make the most of them. And Dan Sudik, who does our special effects, is doing more special effects, more live special effects in this movie than all of the Marvel movies he’s ever made combined, that’s every single Marvel movie that was shot in Atlanta. And so it’s just a much more down-to-earth, darker film – more bloody. “

Gunn wants to surprise the audience and teases that the audience doesn’t know who is going to die.

“But in this movie you don’t know who’s going to be killed,” he said. “And I think the guards know at the beginning that these are guys who may have other problems. But at the end of the day, they’re all really good people. And that’s not the case here. It’s a much more complicated story. Some of these characters can end up being good. Some of these are definitely not good. And most of them are somewhere in between with different shades of gray. The fact that you don’t know what’s going to happen. I don’t think most people think Star-Lord’s head is going to explode in the middle of the movie, but any of these characters could explode in the middle of the movie. And so it is so unknown to be so nervous, really not knowing what is going to happen, is very different than with the guards. “

Harley Quinn has different outfits in the movie, one of which is a red dress and the other is inspired by her outfit in Batman: Arkham City.

“Harley has already been through a lot, as you can see in the film at this point,” Margot Robbie tells us about her red dress. “It started out like a very glamorous dress and here we are. I think we like three versions of the dress. We’re trying to get it in a mood where we tear it down a bit to do some cool fight shit with it. “

“She has a very different mission outfit at the beginning,” she said of the Arkham City-inspired outfit. “Yeah, she didn’t come on the mission in a ball gown, although with Harley she could have said, ‘I just like it. This is what i wanted. I wanted to be pretty today. ‘”

John Cena plays Peacemaker, someone who sees himself as a hero who does anything to achieve peace, even if that means taking down innocent people.

“A cartoon character is very similar to a WWE Superstar,” said Cena. “When you come through the curtain with your background music and your looks, you should essentially give up your character, your purpose, your definition. And we try to imitate comic book characters in WWE. So it’s an even better representation of that. So if you read a story about someone and say, “Oh, well, they have very defined views or very strict views,” or take the attitude you take, is your interpretation of their impression. I think the fun, especially what we’ve done the last few days, I can’t tell you of course, but what we filmed in the last two days is exploring the why in all of this. “

“With this one, I actually had different intentions about what I wanted to do with it,” Cena said of what he wanted to bring into the character. “And then James said, ‘No, I kind of want him douchey more.’ And I thought, ‘You hired the right man.’ In a little feedback on the first day of shooting, all of my preparation, all of the work that I put into what I thought it had completely collapsed, but emerged in a new environment, and along with suggestions, certainly from the guy who running the show and the freedom to say, “Hey, I have what I need. We’re set up. Here’s one for you.” And Daniela and I shared a wonderful moment yesterday where James said, ‘Hey, just do what you want.’ “And I did exactly what I wanted to. It had nothing to do with what was on the Page said it had nothing to do with the continuation of the narrative. He gave me the choice to do what I wanted and I said, ‘Well, leave it. I’m going to write my own story now.’ “

“I’ve been to the ledge many times and been turned away,” Cena said of the movie business and the refusal. “I think it’s the biggest trade I’ll never give up. So, got very close to some and it didn’t work out. It’s really satisfying to see that the movie itself was great, like they didn’t need me. And I remember every single one of those auditions where every single person involved was said, ‘You have a good movie with or without me. I would love to contribute, but I understand if I can’t. ‘ And I did every single one of them. And I told James the same thing. He said, ‘No, you’re my type.’ I say, ‘I hope it’s not full of shit.’ As it turned out, it wasn’t him. “

Daniela Melchior portrays Ratcatcher II, the daughter of the original Ratcatcher. She has the power to control rats and she talks about which actors are afraid of the little rodents.

“Actually, I don’t know if I can say that, but Idris is a bit scared of rats, and so is Viola,” revealed Melchior. “As always when I have the rats, I tried to make it smaller, but they did [rat] doesn’t get any smaller and they already look like: ‘No way. No, keep that thing away. ‘ Yeah, but I always try [go], “Look, she’s so cute. Look, she wouldn’t hurt you. ‘”

David Dastmalchian is Polka-Dot Man, a character who can shoot points out of his body.

“So, [Gunn] started describing how it would work and all the crazy machinations he came up with to tell this story he wanted to tell, ”said Dastmalchian. “Then I realized I was going to play that polka dot man and I cried, man. I mean, I sat there. I thought, ‘I’ll be part of the story that James is going to tell.’ Ever since I first saw his work, I’ve always dreamed of getting a chance to work with him. “

The lives of the members of the Suicide Squad are at stake and expect heads to explode.

“However, this is a very real part of comic book storytelling where life is actually at stake and it’s really life or death,” said Dastmalchian. “And like in Belko, there are some moments that are kind of weird like ‘Holy shit, the head just exploded.’ Yes. Some heads will absolutely explode. There will be brains in this camera, but there are also some where you just say, ‘Hmm’. It gives me as a spectator and now as a player a dramatic intensity. “

“I immediately found a related connection to Abner, this feeling of how it would burden me,” he said. “How pain can cause a person’s body to come in, and how shame can cause a person’s body to go down. So it went inward and downward to find all of my physicality for Abner. And that’s where the voice grows. So when I start thinking about how to build the character, how his voice would work, and think about how all these mechanisms happened. “

The Suicide Squad will be available in theaters and on HBO Max on August 6, 2021.
