ORANGE CITY, Iowa – The Northwestern College men’s basketball team (2-0) defeated Mayville State Comets (1-2) in non-conference action, 90-83, behind 32 points from Alex Van Kalsbeek (Sun., Orange City, Iowa / MOC-Floyd Valley).
Three different raiders hit the 20+ point mark while Northwestern explodes for 90 points while playing their second game in as many days. Van Kalsbeek led all scorers with his 32 points. Matt Onken (R-So., Marshall, Minn./Marshall) achieved a new career high of 24 points and scored 12 points in each half. Grant DeMeulenaere (Sr., Altoona, Iowa / Grand View Christian) also scored 20 points for the win and was the team’s threat from below when he hit four 3s.
The first half was a high-profile affair that worked out in favor of the Raiders, who led behind Van Kalsbeek’s 20 points in the first half at break 54-45.
A second half of the Comets kept them in the game, although the Raiders led the competition several times with over 20 points. Free-throw shooting and Mayville State Turnovers sealed the victory for Northwestern late.
Next up: The Raiders will return to Hardwood on Friday November 5th when they take to the streets for the first time this season to compete in the Bellevue Classic November 5-6. Northwestern will face the Peru State Bobcats (Neb.) On Friday at 5:00 p.m. at the Gordon Lozier Athletic Center on the Bellevue University campus.
