Time to uncover the past

Fans of the iconic ABC Family/Freeform series Pretty little liars are a treat (or maybe a trick?) this summer. A returns to screens with the HBO Max series Pretty Little Liars: Original Sinis scheduled to start streaming on July 28th. The series follows a new group of teenagers in the same universe as the original show but in a new city dealing with all new mysteries.

The new liars are Bailee Madison (Good witch, A week away) as Imogen, Chandler Kinney (Deadly Weapon) as Tabby, Maia Reficco (Kally’s mashup) as Noa, Malia Pyles (Batwoman) as Minnie, Zaria (Black) as Faran and Mallory Bechtel (Hereditary) as Karen.

The new group isn’t just dealing with their own secrets; You are dealing with the ones your parents made 20 years ago. What mysteries could be lurking in their town of Millwood? With a teenage mom, a movie enthusiast, a runner who spent the summer in a juvenile detention center, a thug, a ballerina and a girl who prefers living in the virtual world, the possibilities of mystery are endless. The series leans more toward the horror and mystery elements than the original, meaning it’s not just creepy dolls and text that plague the teenagers this time.

HBO Max released a teaser trailer on June 15, along with a new look for the show’s social media pages. It’s only a minute long and is packed with information hinting at what’s in store for the characters next July.

The photos

As the teaser progresses, viewers watch as the new A mutilates photos of the liars. Imogens is a Polaroid, perhaps from before she was pregnant, cut in half. Some of Tabby’s film negatives, likely chosen for her love of the industry, are placed in a bucket of what could be bleach bath and melted. Minnie’s photo is on a missing poster, hinting at where her story could lead.

The text on the poster is in the first person and says that she is lost and asks people to help find her. A puts the poster in a paper shredder. Faran the ballerina has a school portrait above A’s desk. The new A pierces the photo’s eyes with a nail, toe shoes dangling from it. Noa’s police report is burned, possibly hinting at why she went to the juvenile detention center. Could the photos hint at past and future storylines and what fates await the Liars?

When the teaser opens, the new A is holding a teddy bear. The bear has seen better days, his nose pretty dirty and the tie around his neck untied. Does the bear belong to someone from 20 years ago or is it A’s? There’s also a music box filled with strands of beads and other necklaces, in addition to some other strange items. There is a ticket section in the upper right corner, but it is not clear what it is a ticket for.

There is a photo of Imogen and her mother on the top left, with a reversed polaroid underneath. Something is wrong with it, like it didn’t develop properly. At the bottom of the box is a broken doll. There’s also the glaringly obvious note that reads, “You’re a bad mom.” To whom it is addressed is uncertain, but its meaning is clear.

When Imogen’s cut up photo falls, it lands in the music box next to a crown and book. Could the crown hint at what happened all those years before? Maybe something with a pageant winner or prom queen. The book with the pink cover could be someone’s diary from that time. So does the new A know what happened? The handwritten note next to the crown is upside down in the teaser, but when rotated the right way, it mentions an “Angela” and someone who goes after “he/him” pronouns.

But who is Angela? An Instagram post from showrunner, writer and Producer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa shared some of her story and confirmed that filming for the show had wrapped. Angela and her mother Rose lived in a house in Millwood until something happened to Angela. Her classmates, who are part of the Class of 1999, say they don’t know what happened, but someone always does. Could the crown and book be hers? Is the music box hers? Who wrote the note discussing it? The subtle mention, combined with the Instagram post, confirms what secret the teens are set to debunk.

The last notable item pictured at the top of the book is a pendant with the letter “D” on it. Who is D? Certainly not Angela, her mother, or any of the liars we know of. But it matches the name of one of the liar’s mothers. Imogen’s mother Davie (Carly Pope, Ava DeMary). Could her mother have something to do with what happened to Angela? Is the music box Davies? But if so, why would she have a note about being a bad mom? Was it sent to her by A?

The teaser gives excited fans a hint of what’s to come and also gives them clues as to what the plot will be like once they know how to connect the dots. Will the Liars find out what happened to Angela? We’ll know once her journey begins on July 28th. Until then, you can watch the original series on HBO Max and see what the original Next Gen Liars had to say.
