Pokemon Scarlet & Violet ends an infamous Diamond & Pearl fan grudge

Pokemon Scarlet & Violet may be a bit rough around the edges at the moment, but that hasn’t stopped millions from enthusiastically exploring the Paldea region. There are also plenty of little secrets to uncover, including one that put an end to a 16-year grudge that began way back in Diamond & Pearl. Yes, that’s how traumatizing it was for a generation of Pokemon fans.

During your time in Paldea, you may have come across a trainer who was willing to trade you a haunter if you gave her a pincurchin (thanks GamesRadar). Since Haunter is exactly a million times better than Pincurchin in every way, it would be a fool not to take her on, especially since Haunter then evolves into Gengar and gives you a pretty powerful teammate. A rather mundane encounter for younger Pokémon fans, but an event that cured pain for over 16 years Diamond & Pearl Owner.

If you were a bit of a recluse like I was back when Pokemon Diamond & Pearl came out, that means you had a pretty rough time trying to complete the Pokedex with nobody to trade with. Luckily, there are several NPCs in Sinnoh who will trade with you to give you access to various Pokemon, but those who have obtained Pokemon this way probably don’t need to be reminded of a specific trainer named Mindy that you met in Snowpoint City encounter.

Imagine. One of your favorite Pokemon is Gengar, and you have a seemingly innocent NPC trainer named Mindy who’s willing to trade you a Haunter if you give her a Medicham. For those who don’t know, Haunter will only evolve into Gengar when traded, meaning calling it friend is pretty much inaccessible to those who don’t have other Pokemon lovers. You swap your Medicham for Mindy’s Haunter and eagerly await your new Gengar, only to find that it doesn’t evolve. It turns out that the cruel and vicious Mindy had given her Haunter an Everstone before trading it, an item that prevents evolution.

To really rub it in, Mindy even says, “Haha! Has my Haunter transformed into something else? Just kidding!” and cements her as one of the worst villains in the entire franchise. She is so despised that she even has an aptly titled entire subreddit dedicated to her r/FuckMindy. As you might expect, this subreddit has been awash with memes and cheers that Mindy’s reign of terror is finally at an end.

Thankfully, Pokemon Scarlet & Violet doesn’t get players dirty and gives the player a Gengar as expected. Hopefully this gruesome act never happens again, but at least we learned a valuable lesson. If someone offers you a Machoke, Graveller, Kadabra, or any other Pokemon that evolves when traded, don’t you dare trust them.
