Long Ball Guides Raiders to Sweep of Dordt – KIWARadio.com

ORANGE CITY, Iowa — The Northwestern College baseball team (18-25, 10-16 GPAC) swept the first day of the four-game set against archrival Dordt University (12-30, 8-18 GPAC) by six homers on that day. Jaden Snyder and Drew Dykstra both had multiple home runs in their wins as the Raiders hit 19 in the two games. Brett Shelton and Brady Roberts dominated on the mound.

GAME 1: Northwest 11, Dordt 5

Northwestern took advantage of Dordt’s defensive errors as three runs were scored on wild pitches in the series opener. The Raiders scored six additional base hits in the game for a total of half their hits.

In game 1, Dordt was the first to score a 1-0 lead thanks to three singles in the opening frame. Brett Shelton (So., Clive, Iowa/Des Moines Christian) would settle in and scatter just four hits for the rest of the game.

Northwestern responded with two runs in the bottom half of the first thanks to a solo shot from Mo Watson (Sun., Ankeny, Iowa/Ankeny) that led the inning to a 1-1 tie. Sam Stanford (Sun., Los Angeles, Calif./Pacifica Christian) would tie a three-pointer into the right-midfield gap and later score on a wild field to give Northwestern the lead they would never give up (2-1).

The second inning was similar, this time Jaden Snyder (Jr., Larchwood, Iowa/West Lyon) going to court for the first time. Tanner Schouten (Fr., Orange City, Iowa/Unity Christian) would later score in the frame on a wild field.

In the third, Snyder would go deep again with a 3-run shot, giving the Raiders a 7-1 lead.

Dordt would step into the Northwest lead in the fourth and fifth innings when three long balls cut the lead to 7-5.

Northwestern would score four goals after Dordt’s four unanswered to win the game 11-5. An RBI single by Mason Porepp (Sun, Pleasant Hill, Iowa/Southeast Polk) and an RBI double by Eli Rash (Sun, Lake Lotawana, Mo/Summit Christian Academy) aided the effort.

GAME 2: Northwest 5, Dordt 3
Game 2 turned out to be a little quieter in terms of scoring as both pitchers had quality outings. Again, Northwestern would win three homers in the contest as Drew Dykstra (Wo., Urbandale, Iowa/Urbandale) went deep twice in the contest.

The first three innings were relatively quiet, but Northwestern got to the starter of Dordt in the second thanks to Snyder’s third home run of the day, grabbed the 1-0 and they wouldn’t look back again.

Dykstra’s first home run and later an RBI single from Evan Olesen (So., Estherville, Iowa/Estherville Lincoln Central) extended the Raider lead to 3-0.

Dordt came on the board in the fifth with a two-run blaster from Logan Cline to draw within one (3-2). Once again, the Raiders would react and it would be Dykstra who gave Northwestern the bottom-half two-run lead with another solo shot (4-2).

The two teams traded runs in the sixth when Olesen hit another RBI single for a huge insurance run with an RBI single to right center. Dordt would get a runner in the seventh for second, but Northwestern would prevail 5-3 to win the day.

The Raiders and Defenders finish their four-game set Friday at the Baseball Diamond in Orange City with the first field scheduled for 2:00 p.m. Stay tuned to nwcraiders.com should the weather play a role tomorrow.
