“It’s my turn to bleed for my mother”

Madonna added their collection of body art.

The music icon, 63, posted her a video and pictures Instagram account on Monday, showing her going under the needle to get some new ink on her wrist.

The tattoo says “Maman” – the French word for “mother” – and is in honor of Madonna’s late mother and namesake, Madonna Louise Fortin, who died in 1963 when the singer was 5 years old.

In the Instagram video she shared, Madonna can be heard saying, “I’m doing this for my mom.”

As Sly and the Family Stone’s track “Family Affair” plays, a tattoo artist at the Lovers & Killers salon in Brooklyn works on Madonna’s right wrist, adding the word just below her “X” tattoo, which is in honor of her 2019 album Mrs. X

Later in the clip, the “Vogue” singer is heard saying, “Because when you give birth, what do you do? You’re bleeding.”

“It’s all connected,” she continues. She also tells son David Bandawho comes to check her progress: “I can’t tell my mother’s name because it’s the same as mine. It would look like I had my own frigging name drawn on my arm!”

“Right, right,” replies David, 16.

Once the tattoo is complete, Madonna says to the camera, “My mother bled for me, so I bleed for her. It’s a family affair.”

She echoed the same sentiment in the caption to her video post, writing, “It’s my turn to bleed for my mom.”

The death of Madonna’s mother has inspired her work throughout her music career, beginning with “Promise to Try” off her hit 1989 album Like a prayer and “Mer Girl” from the 1998s beam of light to “Mother and Father” from 2003 on her record American life. She has repeatedly mentioned it as a formative experience in her youth, including in her 1991 documentary truth or Dare.

On her Instagram Stories on Monday, Madonna shared several more photos of the new ink, along with those of her other recent tattoo — a geometric “Tree of Life” design popular in the Kabbalistic tradition she follows.

Pictures also revealed that David appeared to have the same tattoo on his arm that matched his mother’s.

Madonna’s other tattoos include her first from 2020, a set of letters made up of the initials of all six of her children: Lourdes Leon25, Rocco Richie21, David Banda, Mercy James, 16, and twins Stella and Estere, 9.

She also boasts a Hebrew word from the book of Genesis that loosely translates to “and he kissed.” All of their ink is on the inside of their wrists.
